A new layer of the Golgi complex : membrane trafficking, glycosylation and signaling transduction
The Golgi complex plays a central role in the secretory pathway by regulating sorting, trafficking and post-translational modification of secretory cargoes. It is structurally a unique which consists of several stacks, as known as cisternae. Morphologic change has been found in various physiological and pathological conditions including cancer, immunodeficiency and neurodegenerative disease. These changes affect the functional alteration in glycosylation and membrane trafficking of secretory proteins. Thus, there is long-standing question about the cause and effect between morphologic change and functional alteration of the Golgi complex. This review summarizes a journey to understanding how the Golgi complex acts in many cellular events. These include the molecular mechanisms and physiologic importance of the secretory pathway. Moreover, we review recent findings that the Golgi complex regulates multiple signaling pathways for organelle homeostasis.
