Participating in the FAOBMB Young Scientist Program (YSP) 2025 in Busan, South Korea, from May 18th to 20th, was a defining milestone in my scientific journey. I had the privilege of attending this prestigious program as the sole Sri Lankan representative, although I am currently pursuing my PhD in Australia. Being able to carry forward Sri Lanka’s presence in such a respected international platform was both an honour and a deeply personal moment of pride. I was also fortunate to be awarded the YSP travel fellowship, which supported my participation.

I had the opportunity to present my research titled “Prevalence of Subclinical Hypothyroidism in a Non-Diabetic Young Female Population and Its Impact on Developing Diabetes and Cardiometabolic Risk” through both an oral presentation and a poster session. Engaging with peers from diverse regions and disciplines opened new perspectives in my field. Conversations with fellow young scientists not only broadened my understanding of different research methodologies but also provided insights into technical challenges I had been facing in my own work. This cross-border knowledge exchange was one of the most valuable aspects of the YSP experience, contributing to both my current PhD work and potential future collaborations.
A key highlight of the program was our visit to IDC Prestige Biopharma. Learning about their cutting-edge antibody research and biopharmaceutical applications offered an industry-oriented perspective that I found particularly inspiring as an academic researcher. This experience emphasized the translational potential of scientific work and opened my mind to possible industry pathways after my PhD.
Beyond the scientific discussions, the YSP program enriched us culturally. The traditional Korean lunch and the hotpot dinner were delightful experiences, allowing us to bond over shared meals. The evening cable car ride over Busan and the visit to the scenic Busan beach were unforgettable experiences that strengthened our global network on a personal level.

From May 20th to 23rd, the main FAOBMB conference at the BEXCO Convention Centre provided a valuable platform to network with leading scientists, keynote speakers, and senior researchers from around the world. I networked with keynote speakers and senior researchers from Singapore, China, Japan, and Australia, and reconnected with FAOBMB members from Thailand 2023 and Melbourne 2024. Unlike other international conferences I have attended, this event provided a truly collaborative and supportive environment. Importantly, several of the professional contacts I made have already led to ongoing conversations around potential research partnerships and career opportunities..
Outside the conference, Busan’s beauty left a lasting impression. The Haeundae beach sand festival, Haeunjeongsa temple, blooming rose gardens, and vibrant Korean street foods added rich cultural layers to my experience. One of my most colourful memories was dressing in the traditional Hanbok, thanks to the kind assistance of a local guide from the conference travel desk.

Perhaps the most heartwarming experience occurred when I lost my phone in a taxi on the way to the airport. Thanks to the kindness and helpfulness of a Korean airport staff member, I retrieved it just in time to catch my flight—an unexpected yet unforgettable reminder of the generosity I encountered throughout my time in Korea. Reflecting on this journey, I am filled with gratitude—for the scientific insights, cultural experiences, and human kindness that made my YSP-FAOBMB 2025 experience truly extraordinary.
