I think most people can sympathise with the idea that travelling overseas on a nine-hour flight to a country where you don’t speak the language to present some of your own work might feel a little bit intimidating. Yet my experience with attending the Young Scientist Program, and then the larger FAOBMB 25 conference in Busan, South Korea, turned out to be one of the highlights of my PhD journey.

For the three days leading up to the main FAOBMB 25 conference, I had the privilege of participating in the Young Scientist Program, held at the futuristic Prestige Biopharma Innovation Discovery Centre. This program offered us a unique opportunity to engage with every participant and their research, without the pressure of choosing between overlapping sessions. This setting allowed for meaningful conversations and exposure to exciting new science from people from all over Asia and Oceania. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many passionate early-career researchers from across Asian and Oceania, not only to talk science, but to also make new friends.

Beyond the science, the Young Scientist Program also gave me an unforgettable experience with South Korea culture. From sharing friend chicken and beer after a chaotic but exhilarating first day with new friends, to exploring some of Busan’s beaches on a tour bus, these moments added a personal and cultural touch to an already exciting program. They reminded us that science is not just about data and publications, but also about the connection and curiosity shared when people come together.

The Young Scientist Program was also the perfect introduction before the larger and main FAOBMB 25 conference. Thanks to the friendships I had formed during the program, I never felt alone, despite the conference boasting over 4000 participants. There was always a familiar face nearby, which made navigating the larger conference, and finding friends to grab a coffee during breaks, that much easier. The connections I made at the Young Scientist program turned what could have been an overwhelming experience into one filled with friendship and support.

As cliché as it may sound, this experience truly was a highlight of my PhD. The Young Scientist Program allowed me to explore a new country, build lasting friendships with people from South Korea and beyond, and engage with science in new and exciting ways. I returned from this trip with not only new scientific knowledge, but also new friends, a new love for Korean fried chicken and memories that I will cherish for years to come.
